Today I was so excited to find out that my pic is on Carol Marine's Blogspot in a group photo.  This is one artist that I absolutely love and have been following her for years and trying to get in to her workshop.  It is like a dream come true to have been able to attend.  We came from all parts of North America and we were not disappointed.  Everyone of us felt the same way and we ended up calling ourselves "Carol Marine Stalkers." I am truly blessed!  Thank you Carol!

Here are my Canada kids. This was a really great group. Honestly, I can't say one bad thing about them. Anyone who can put up with a rashy, itchy istructor for 5 days deserves my full respect! Aren't they cute?!

Just finished a week long workshop with my favourite artist Carol Marine whom I have been following for several years.  I have been trying to get in to her workshop for 2 years and was lucky enough to get in to the Nanaimo workshop.  Was one of the most enjoyable weeks of my life between her classes and staying with relatives on Nanoose Bay.  Carol Marine is a wonderful teacher, incredible artist, mentor, and all round fantastic lady.  18 people were in this workshop and we all just 'clicked'. Thank you Carol!

Had a fantastic 2 day workshop with Mike Svob whom I have idolized for years.  I just love his style of painting.  He showed us 2 methods of painting.  Was a lot to digest in only 2 days.  Now to find the time to practice, practice, practice!

Designing with Colour", acrylic / oil (water soluble only) — Instructor Mike Svob

Learn New Vivid Painting Techniques in Acrylic / Oil

The workshop will open your eyes by showing you how your choice of painting technique and medium can develop into your own personal style. You will discover why acrylic and or oil (water soluble only) are extremely adaptable mediums. You will learn why visual artists need to see in a new and different way. And why do painters do that squinting thing anyway?

Knowledge gained in the course will help you tie your ideas into a painting you can call your own. Each day will start with a demonstration by Mike followed by individual counselling and critiquing with each painter to help you find your own muse and break that artist block all artists come up against.

2 day workshop with Perry Haddock

This week I was lucky enough to have a 2 day one-on-one workshop with one of my favourite impressionist landscape artists Perry Haddock.  Perry's impressionist loose painterly style comes from his keen eye of observation and his use of confident broad strokes in a bright, chromatic palette.  My good friend Brenda Alberts, owner of the Birthplace of BC Gallery in Fort Langley was kind enough to provide studio space.

The "Relationship" Method of Art - Portraiture Workshop

2/11/2013

I spent 8 hours of my day yesterday taking a beginner's portraiture class with Robert Barrett of the Neighbourhood Art Studio.  The class consisted of a maximum of 5 students allowing us to have full view of the model.  After a brief coffee and snacks we got right into it with the famous Bob's Law.  (This has been drilled into my brain for 2 years now and I still struggle to remember it word for word.)

If we did not remember we were jokingly "boo'd" at.  I don't think any of us passed Bob's Law test.  His famous law states..........."You never make a mark unless that mark is related to something that already exists!"

Although I do not plan on painting portraits I found this class to be invaluable for learning techniques to compare distances, angles, positive and negative space, proportions of the face along with blending skin tones.  Now if only I could find the time to practice.

Qualicum Beach Workshop with Mike Svob

Learn New Vivid Painting Techniques in Acrylic / Oil

For years I having been following the works by Mike Svob as I love his use of colour and  brush techniques.  He says that one should never paint colours that we do not like nor do we need to paint the colours that we see.  As long as you have done your 'notan's or thumbnail sketches so that you have strong values (lights, dark, and mid tones) you can assign any colour to your painting and still create a great painting.

Mike will be holding a 2 day workshop the first week in April at Qualicum Beach and I am so excited as I just signed up.  He has been one of my favourite artists for years and I very much look forward to learning some of his techniques first hand and applying them to my own painting style.
